Wow. I actually had a similar situation right at the Ohio/Kentucky line one time, but it was long ago. I was detained, they had a dog…everything. I was pissed. All I was doing was driving through with a packed car to my next burlesque gig, it was late, I was exhausted, and this fucker was straight up power hungry with no reason to hold me.

I learned AFTER that it’s illegal for cops to search your car (or any property) without a warrant or consent…and “mind if I search your car” is basically a trick question. The correct (and very calm) answer: “Officer, I know you’re just doing your job, but I don’t consent to searches.” 4th Amendment protects us from search and seizure without probable cause.

Nowadays, we’re hearing about cops being killed at routine traffic stops every single week, so I guess they have to be careful with anyone and everyone. Regardless, knowing your rights is really important and searching is truly unnecessary.

Glad nothing bad happened to you and this is a very well-written story.
